What is Asbestos? from TopAsbestosRemoval.co.uk

Asbestos is a durable and fire resistant fibre which was extensively used throughout the 20th century in the construction industry. The problem with asbestos is that it contains microscopic fibres which you can inhale which happens when asbestos is disturbed and the fibres are released into the air.

What is asbestos? Asbestos is most easily identifiable by its fibrous texture. Depending on whether it has been painted over or not, it is a grey, white colour (sometimes, this can have a brown or even blue tinge to it). It’s normally found in the infrastructure of a building, so look around walls and ceilings for it. A lot of asbestos is found on old garage roofs, and can come in corrugated panels. It is durable, but brittle so if there is any damage or broken off sections, this is normally a tell tale sign.

It can also come in flock form. This is like cotton wool and is the most dangerous form of asbestos. The fibres aren’t bonded down like asbestos cement, so any breathing will introduce the fibres into the respiratory system leading to severe health problems.
