Deadly asbestos panels were found dumped in a Blackpool alley

For the second time now, residents in South Shore have discovered industrial waste including asbestos sheeting dumped in the alley behind their homes by fly-tippers.

Parents were concerned that children could have come into contact with the fibres whilst playing in the alleyway.

Coun Fred Jackson, cabinet member for streets and transport for Blackpool Council, said: “All fly tipping is a crime, but this is exceptionally serious.

“It goes without saying how dangerous asbestos can be. We believe that this has been done by an organised group, and will use all methods at our disposal to catch the culprits and bring them to justice.”

Pay out after asbestos related death

A Somerset woman is to recieve £290,000 in compensation from Bristol Water following her husband’s death from cancer, which alledgedly has been proven to be linked with asbestos exposure. David Bean, from Shepton Mallet, had worked for the company as an engineer.

It was revealed that he had no protection when visiting pumping stations which had been housing boilers that were covered with asbestos cement lagging.

Bristol Water said “stringent safety measures” had now been introduced for staff working with asbestos.

Asbestos exemption to ‘no-win, no-fee’ changes concerning Mesothelioma

A justice minister has said that sufferers of asbestos-related cancer will initially be exempt from government changes to “no-win, no-fee” rules.

Jonathan Djanogly revealed there would be a review of the changes, which will see successful claimants pay part of their damages to their solicitors.

Peers and campaigners say mesothelioma victims should be exempt because the illness’s severity is indisputable.

The changes to no-win, no-fee are designed to prevent lawyers claiming “success fees” from the losing side.

Instead, it will see them receive a share of the compensation – up to a maximum of 25% of the total pay-out –  given to their own client.
