Whenever you are looking to demolish or refurbish a property you should always carryout an asbestos survey. Formally called a type 3 asbestos survey they are now more communally known as refurbishment/demolition survey. The idea is that we should test any suspected areas before we carry out any works that may put any one working in those areas in any danger.

A waste management company has made an application to Peterborough City Council planners to allow the disposal of asbestos waste at their Eye site.

The application is part of  an extension that would keep the site open until at least 2021.

Currently there are no sites in Peterborough that take asbestos and all waste needs to be taken to other sites across the UK.

The application has cause some concern with local councilors who are worried at the effects on the surrounding areas.

It will be discussed at the Planning and Environmental Protection Committee at 1.30pm on February 7 when a decision should be made on the application.

Asbestos removal uk is controlled by Asbestos Regulations which were put into place on 13^th November 2006. This prohibits the importation, supply and use of all forms of asbestos.

These Regulations bring together the previous sets of Regulations covering the prohibition of asbestos, the control of asbestos at work and asbestos licensing.

The regulation support the ban brought in for blue and brown asbestos in 1985 and for white asbestos in 1999.

This means if your property is was built before the year 2000 there is distinct chance asbestos could be found.

Asbestos was found in a well known hospital after a routine inspection. Ducts have now been sealed but there was some concern as to the effect of staff members health.

The hospital offices were found to be safe after extensive testing and the danger to anyone worked within the ducts was low.

Asbestos was routinely used as a way to insulate and fireproof buildings from the 1950s through to the mid-1980s.

A widow of a former Crewe Works employee spoke about her husbands horrific experience of asbestos exposure before the dangers where recognised.

William Martin, works as a fitter on the railway between 1956 and 1988. After leaving school he gained an apprenticeship to follow in his families footsteps.

He died aged 70, from lung disease. In an inquest this week the coroner heard evidence of how Mr Martin had spent most of his working life exposed to asbestos.

In a ‘life statement’ which was read out in the hearing,

It read: “Asbestos was in the atmosphere all the time. You couldn’t help but inhale it.

“You could see it the dust particles in the rays of sunlight.

“Some of the asbestos would still be clinging to the boilers. It would be on my hands. But it was a job I enjoyed.

“I do recall having blue asbestos on my sandwich – it was everywhere. At the end of the day my overalls would be covered thick with asbestos dust. We would not be provided with any masks.”

Dr Janet Napier, deputy coroner for Cheshire description of his experience will give the clearest indication of how this was viewed. She described the exposure to asbestos was like “capital punishment for being a hard worker”.

With this is in mind it shows why asbestos removals in the uk, is now been taken so seriously.  People are still at risk if they don’t have the asbestos removed to HSE standards.  This sad story reminds us of the importance and the dangers of asbestos.

Dealing with asbestos claims in an effective manor will be a priority for the association of British Insurers in 2012, to reduce insurance costs.

The director general Otto Thoresen today in a presentation called asbestos a “vivid example of the long term nature of insurance” asking companied to deal with asbestos claims effectively.

“Here we are dealing with the consequences of problems from the 1950s and 1960s which are not of today’s making,” he explained. “It’s a clear example of changing standards and expectations of people – and how our long term insurance cover needs to be able to accommodate these”

“Our priority for dealing reasonably with asbestos, is to ensure that people who contract this horrible disease, mesothelioma, can trace an insurer where there is one – and seek compensation quickly.”

This should help home owners in reducing insurance cost, and effectively speeding up the process on any domestic asbestos removal claims that are presented to insurance companies.

Did you know that asbestos regulations require that you train anyone who is likely to come into contact with asbestos? So if you work as a electrician, plumber, builder or in site maintenance…basically anywhere that could come into contact with asbestos you should be trained at least so you know not to disturb any asbestos present and identifying what type of asbestos helps when gaining asbestos removal costs.
