Dale Farm declared a no go zone after deadly asbestos is uncovered

The former Dale Farm traveller site has been marked as a no go area after asbestos was found on some of the bulldozed plots.

It is not yet known whether asbestos was dug up during the eviction or if it was dumped by fly-tippers afterwards. Either way, officials from the Environment Agency are urging no one to venture onto the site while an investigation is carried out.

An agency spokeswoman said: “We advised residents to stay away from the cleared area of Dale Farm as a precaution. “

When consultants visited the site to take samples they identified bonded asbestos sheeting on some plots. “

Asbestos can have health implications if broken up so people were advised to avoid any actions that might break it up or disturb it.”

Deadly asbestos panels were found dumped in a Blackpool alley

For the second time now, residents in South Shore have discovered industrial waste including asbestos sheeting dumped in the alley behind their homes by fly-tippers.

Parents were concerned that children could have come into contact with the fibres whilst playing in the alleyway.

Coun Fred Jackson, cabinet member for streets and transport for Blackpool Council, said: “All fly tipping is a crime, but this is exceptionally serious.

“It goes without saying how dangerous asbestos can be. We believe that this has been done by an organised group, and will use all methods at our disposal to catch the culprits and bring them to justice.”

Pay out after asbestos related death

A Somerset woman is to recieve £290,000 in compensation from Bristol Water following her husband’s death from cancer, which alledgedly has been proven to be linked with asbestos exposure. David Bean, from Shepton Mallet, had worked for the company as an engineer.

It was revealed that he had no protection when visiting pumping stations which had been housing boilers that were covered with asbestos cement lagging.

Bristol Water said “stringent safety measures” had now been introduced for staff working with asbestos.

Asbestos removal equipment earmarked for Darwen

Those seeking asbestos removal equipment might have noted that a number of allotments in Darwen are not operational due to contamination fears.

Local authorities and residents successfully campaigned for the creation of the 36 plots, but due to the presence of white asbestos, only 19 are in use.

The Blackburn Citizen reports that opinions are divided in the area as to the extent of the threat.

Still, when it comes to asbestos, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Fawley Residents Not A Fan of Asbestos Skip Hire

Residents in a small village in Hampshire rose up against the council’s decision to temporarily hold an asbestos skip right on their doorstep. Apparently this asbestos skip hire scheme, although a good idea in theory, would have been placed right near a school route, a large Co-op and several homes, putting people at risk. You can read the full article here.

Thinking About Asbestos Flue Removal?

Was just wandering around the interweb when I came on this little nugget on diynot.com, from a very informed forum user called Cremeegg (yum!). Talking about asbestos flue removal, he says that boiler flues are most likely made with asbestos cement which is actually quite safe unless it’s cut, broken, drilled or sanded. He says, “most people are paranoid about it when they shouldn’t be. Get paranoid about the asbestos sprayed onto metal beams (about 90% asbestos) and the asbestos wall boards used alot in 1960-1970’s building that are 40% asbestos. Let’s get real about asbestos cement”. My sentiments exactly, Cremeegg, my sentiments exactly. Read the rest of his post here. If you are thinking about asbestos flue removal then give our lovely phone people a call on 0844 288 7264.

An Education

We all like to learn something new so I found this great (albeit American made) video on asbestos. Pay close attention, there’ll be questions at the end of class.
