Asbestos-related deaths growing still

Chief executive of the British Lung Foundation [BLF], Dame Helena Shovelton, warns that asbestos-related deaths could continue to rise unless people become aware there may still be a risk in their home.

Asbestos-related diseases kill more people than road accidents in the UK each year, and the number is still growing – deaths are set to peak around 2016.

One of the main concerns is the lack of awareness and understanding there is about the potential health hazard asbestos poses among those doing DIY.

A recent BLF survey of 2,000 adults showed that only 22% knew that all forms of asbestos were finally banned in the 1990s, while 67% said they could not confidently identify asbestos around the house.

These figures suggest that people’s awareness of the danger is fading – a worrying sign.

Glasgow school fire causes asbestos debris

Residents near a derelict school in Glasgow which was set on fire have been told to limit use of their gardens because the debris may contain white asbestos.

A clean-up is under way following the blaze at the former StMark’s primary in the Tollcross area of Glasgow.

Asbestos specialists are clearing the debris and residents are urged not to try to do the work themselves. People have been asked to keep out of their gardens as much as possible until the clear-up has finished.

Glasgow City Council said there is no immediate risk to public health and that air quality is well within acceptable limits.

Asbestos – The Novel!

A novel on James Hardie Industries, Asbestos House by Gideon Haigh deals with how a corporation battled against law suit after law suit on asbestos related compensation. Worth reading if you have an interest in the booming, if ill-fated, asbestos industry of the 20th century.

Asbestos removal equipment earmarked for Darwen

Those seeking asbestos removal equipment might have noted that a number of allotments in Darwen are not operational due to contamination fears.

Local authorities and residents successfully campaigned for the creation of the 36 plots, but due to the presence of white asbestos, only 19 are in use.

The Blackburn Citizen reports that opinions are divided in the area as to the extent of the threat.

Still, when it comes to asbestos, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Fawley Residents Not A Fan of Asbestos Skip Hire

Residents in a small village in Hampshire rose up against the council’s decision to temporarily hold an asbestos skip right on their doorstep. Apparently this asbestos skip hire scheme, although a good idea in theory, would have been placed right near a school route, a large Co-op and several homes, putting people at risk. Thinking About Asbestos Flue Removal?

Was just wandering around the interweb when I came on this little nugget on diynot.com, from a very informed forum user called Cremeegg (yum!). Talking about asbestos flue removal, he says that boiler flues are most likely made with asbestos cement which is actually quite safe unless it’s cut, broken, drilled or sanded. He says, “most people are paranoid about it when they shouldn’t be. Get paranoid about the asbestos sprayed onto metal beams (about 90% asbestos) and the asbestos wall boards used alot in 1960-1970’s building that are 40% asbestos. Let’s get real about asbestos cement”. My sentiments exactly, Cremeegg, my sentiments exactly. Read the rest of his post here. If you are thinking about asbestos flue removal then give our lovely phone people a call on 0844 288 7264.

An Education

We all like to learn something new so I found this great (albeit American made) video on asbestos. Pay close attention, there’ll be questions at the end of class.
